Kiera(click for updates)
|

Kiera spent the weekend in the care of the UGA Vet Orthopedics Ward(University of Georgia) and will be moved to surgery first thing Monday morning. The Orthopedic surgeon reports that plates and pins will be put in to brace and set the bones. Due to her size and age surgery is always risky and there is always a chance of infection. She will stay overnight (longer if needed) in ICU for observation. Once stabilized she will be transferred back to the Orthopedic ward to begin physical therapy. Because Kiera had never really lived outside a crate/kennel before and has had no leash training, this will be the longest process.

The surgeon feels that if they can get her walking on a leash comfortably it will speed healing and minimize her stay at the hospital. Kiera is in good health otherwise and all blood work came back normal. She is resting comfortably, and eating and drinking fine. I think she may have already stolen some hearts at the vet. Even so, discounts for rescue groups are hard to come by and the total cost of her surgery and recovery could well exceed the estimate of $2000. Your good thoughts and prayers, and of course donations, are most definitely needed for sweet little Kiera. Thank you!!

UPDATE - 1/11/2005 - Kiera is ADOPTED!! |
UPDATE - 10/19/2004 |

Kiera is now home from her long stay at the UGA Small Animal Hospital. The interns there all fell in love and can't wait until her re-checks. She stole everyone's hearts. The hard cast has been removed and she now has on a soft cast with a splint. She does have to wear an e-collar so she won't lick the cast though. Her physical therapy is going well and she's walking on that leg now. We have three 5-10 minute sessions per day and she's become a pro. We are so thrilled to finally have her home with us, as are her foster siblings. Kiera has her own puppy playpen so she can't jump around and hurt herself further. She's doing great with her housebreaking and leash training and is just a complete love. Little Kiera is going to make someone very very happy, and she will of course take a little peice of my heart when she leaves us.
Kiera's surgery totaled $2000 which is a huge amount out of our rescue fund. We are in desperate need of donations so that we can continue to
help dogs in our care as well as incoming dogs. Hope's Haven never wants to have to turn away a dog in need, therefore any amount you can spare
will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your support!
