Charmed's Story'Did you ever need someone so bad? Did you ever need someone that you knew that you could not have? Did you ever try so hard that your world just falls apart? If you did, then you would know how I felt about Charmed and what happened to my world. But I didn't always feel this way. This story is dedicated to Charmed, the cat that broke my heart.

The one thing that the group recommended that I should start to use right away (that I didn't) was interferon. After a few weeks I talked the vet that had vaccinated Charmed into giving me some interferon to try. She was young and willing to listen. In fact she gave it to me for free since they had already mixed it for a client but the cat passed away before they could pick it up. She felt the chances were that it really wouldn't help but since they were going to throw it out it couldn't hurt if Charmed tried it.

I waited another month before we tested Charmed again. I thought the vet had sent out for the IFA test but as I found out later she used the Elisa test. Charmed was positive once again. But with the encouragement of the group to stay on interferon for six month before testing, I still believed he would test negative on his next test.

When Charmed reached six months of age he went with his two brothers to be neutered. He had now caught up to his brothers in size. With no swollen nodes at all, he was very healthy. I started to let him have the one room where my cats had their litter boxes instead of confining him to playing on the bed. He was getting too big for the bed and didn't have enough room to exercise. Every morning I would take up the litter boxes before I let him have the room. I would do this again every night when I came home from work before I ate dinner. At first I was being overly cautious as I was 'Lysoling' the room each time after he was done playing. Then I realized I was overreacting to the situation. After all, another of my cats named Chewy had become sick in the past and was eventually diagnosed with FELV. Before I knew he was positive he was interacting and sharing food with my other cats for three months. Although I lost Chewy to FELV, no one else caught the virus from him. So I stopped disinfecting the room after I started to realize this was being overprotective. I started to let him mingle with my cats while I was watching him. My other cats were not too sure of Charmed so chasing was about all they were willing to do at first. Eventually chasing led to jumping. I had to laugh when Charmed rolled on top of his brother and his brother on top of him. However, I began to worry when Charmed kept opening his mouth as he shook his head from side to side. I said "Charmed close your mouth" and to my surprise he did he just that as he continued to play.

Muiesette & TC Muiesette and TC (Charmed’s siblings)

Another Kodak moment I missed was one day when Charmed was playing tag with TC while running from room to room. I was running behind them trying to keep an eye on them and when I caught up to them they looked at me and both fell to the floor. Their combined weight of thirty-two pounds made a loud thud as they hit the floor together. Their interlocking bodies looked like a heart shape with their faces pressed up against each other and their paws wrapped around each other's shoulders. Although I didn't have a camera, I will always remember the vision of the two of them lying there together.

As time went by Charmed became more than just a foster cat. I began to feel deep down inside that he was mine. I could not wait till I would come home to rush in to see him. When I got there he would be pacing back and forth waiting for me to let him out. His eyes would light up as soon as he would see me and he would race around like a bat out of hell. There was not a mean bone in his body. He had the sweetest little meow. Every morning when he would hear my alarm he would start a little 'mu' sound that he kept up until I came in to see him. If I came home and didn't come in right away to see him he would make the same sound. He became my soul mate and I feel I was his. I was basically his main playmate. He would bite and wrestle with my hand and if I would say "No bite" he would just look up at me with those soulful eyes all big and crazy. I would tease him and grab his face saying "No bite". Charmed loved chewing paper. I could never leave important papers in his playroom, if I did they quickly became his chew toys. One time I was printing invoices and didn't even think about the fact he was in the room. This was a real treat for Charmed, papers popping out of the printer and flying in the air. He had such a great time chasing them and tearing them up. I remember the one time I left a roll of paper towels in the room. Charmed was already out when I came home that day. He enjoyed those towels so much. There were little pieces all over the room. It looked like confetti had been thrown about. He did leave a few towels on the roll along with the addition of teeth and claw marks. I think he loved paper more than catnip!

It was not too much longer before we decided to test again. Unfortunately he was positive on both tests in April. Shortly thereafter, I went to a seminar about Holistic practices. I was impressed and wanted to try a holistic vet. I went back to a pet store that I had gone to in February where someone had recommended a holistic vet in New York. What was unique about this vet was that she was particularly knowledgeable about FELV. I was pleasantly surprised to find that same person still working there. She gave me the name of the vet and I made an appointment to see her.

What impressed me the most about this vet was that she gave me hope. While she didn't guarantee anything, she indicated she had some previous luck with converting FELV cats. She told me that some cats had taken three months, others up to two years, and some never converted. I left her office with my new found hope and with some homeopathic remedies to try. We cut out all by-product type cat foods. I think the only by-product he ate after that was a cat treat here and there until I found non by-product cat treats.

The vet also recommended feeding a raw diet. So after about a month I tried the “Raw” thing. I gave Charmed some raw ground chicken. Charmed first thought, Oh a new toy and batted it around for a bit. I took it away and tried again by putting it on a plate. I told him it was something to eat. He pawed at it, then he picked it up to examine with his paw he brought it to his nose smelled it looked at me tilted his head as if to say “It’s not cooked, Yeah right, You eat it then!” Later on I tried watermelon and he seemed to like that, everyday with his dinner he would eat about 1/8 cup of watermelon. As for raw meat, a few months later I tried raw chicken breast and he did eat that but he still played with it a bit. Not sure why he ate the raw chicken breast and not the ground chicken, I guess he preferred white meat only!
