A TRIBUTE TO BENJI
(aka Gretchen)

Benji (aka Gretchen)

In memory of a lovely stray - an almost blind boxer dog that was rescued from a gas chamber facility at an animal control pound because she was starving to death. A home was found for her but, unfortunately, it was not to be. Benji (aka Gretchen) died of a perforated stomach a few days after being retrieved from the damp darkness of the pound.

Sadness! Desperation! Loneliness!
My life has come to its journey's end.
No more the blades of grass around my paws,
No more sniffs at the morning dew.

Why so short? What did I do?
They must have no more use for me.
Not so long ago they were thrilled with me.
I was small and cuddly and loved to play
I saw their smiles; I heard them laugh
Now all I see are the faces of doom.

Alone in this silent tunnel of darkness all around me
My bones begin to ache in the dampness
As I sit amid the aura of death - and wait . .
A prisoner of my memories.

The yelp of anguish
The sigh of exhaustion
The bark of fear
A human voice . . . . a whimper
And then . . . . . nothing!

No longer of that earthly place, I am free at last!
And the song I sing is the song of all
Who abide here on this heavenly shore.

Regrets no more, anguish no more.
The pain of my twilight days
Has blossomed into eternal peace
And so the song I sing is a song for all!

Who said I have no soul?
My soul had presence upon that earth
As every root and every raindrop.
My paws left footprints in the soil
And memories for those who knew me.

And now I continue to a kinder place
Where others willingly make room for me.
No longer tossed aside, I will be happy there
Knowing that somewhere there are those who care.
