Thank you for your interest in adopting a rescued dachshund.
We are extremely concerned with the attitude of many individuals that a dog can simply be disposed of if it is no longer convenient. We believe that this is the root of the nationwide animal overpopulation problem that exists today. We are doing our part to promote responsible dog ownership by rescuing dachshunds that face certain death at area animal control facilities. We also receive dogs from owners who can no longer keep them as well as strays that have been picked up by caring individuals.
In order to place each dog in the right home, we ask that you take a few moments to complete this application and return it to us. We care deeply about each dog that comes through our program. We have invested our hearts as well as our time and money in preparing these dogs for a long and happy life as a member of a loving family. Your patience with our questions is appreciated.
If we currently have dogs available for adoption, we will call and discuss them with your after your application is returned. If we do not have the right dog for you at this time, we will hold your application until we do. Either way, it shouldn't be long before you have a dachshund to love.

In order to be considered for an adoption, you must:Be at least 18 yrs of ageHave verifiable identification such as a driver's license or other picture IDProvide proof of authorization to have a pet if you rent your home
Right of Refusal:Houston Dachshund Rescue reserves the right to deny adoption of any dogs into a situation that we deem inappropriate.We also require a signed adoption contract promising that you will return the dog to us should you have to give it up for any reason.
Costs for Adopted Dogs:Please be prepared to make a donation of $150 (adjustments are made to this cost if there is a special needs dog, or for senior citizens, both human and canine) to cover expenses associated with veterinary care of your adopted dachshund. The dog you adopt will have had any necessary veterinary care completed and will be current on all shots, spayed/neutered, wormed, tested for heartworms (treated if necessary) and on heartworm preventative. Dogs that have been treated for heartworms will need to be on Heartguard brand preventative.
Our final comment on Dachshund Ownership:
Pet ownership is a very serious commitment. It should never be taken lightly. In our effort to stem the tide of unwanted animals, we at Houston Dachshund Rescue are investing ourselves in an effort to help the breed that we cherish. Please be prepared to discuss this application in detail with a member of the rescue committee. We do not intend to offend you, but the best interests of the dogs must come first. We must satisfy ourselves that each adoptive family is the right family for the dog we place. Our application and screening process may be more rigorous than others you have encountered. Please forgive our tedious approach and try to remember that we do it because we love the dogs!
Available dogs will not be discussed until this application is returned. Here is a handout prepared by us to help ease your new friend into your home. If your interested in any of our Doxies, please fill out our Adoption Contract below, then proceed on to our Application from there, we must have both forms in order for you to be considered, so follow instructions carefully. Application Instructions
If you choose to send it back via email, please print the last page, and sign it and return it via postal mail, we will have to have an "original" signature on file before we are able to complete your application. Please note that this organization is run on a volunteer basis, and therefore our turn around time is at least 1-2 weeks. Thank you for your cooperation, we look forward to working with you.
